Washington D.C. through my eyes (IX)
The Korean War Veterans Memorial: This memorial is visually stunning. As one approaches it, one sees the statues of 19 soldiers on patrol heading up the hill. Etched on their faces are emotions of battle-weary soldiers heading yet again for another mission on another day in the same war. As I walked past the statues, I could almost see the rain lashing down on them. The horror, the horror of war.
There's another part to the memorial that I liked a lot because it is so striking. It is called the wall of faces. More than 2500 photographic, archival images representing the land, sea and air troops that supported those who fought in the war have been sandblasted onto the wall which is made from "Academy Black" granite from California. The images are very life-like and they are very beautiful. I could see sailors, marines and airmen as well as tank and truck drivers among them.
Noteworthy: One of the best-known TV shows about war, MASH, takes place in Korea and is about the doctors and nurses who served in the war.
