Washington D.C. through my eyes (X)

Lincoln Memorial: Built to honour Abraham Lincoln (the 16th US President), the building is in the form of a Greek Doric temple. Lincoln helped preserve the United States during his term by defeating the secessionist Confederate States of American in the American Civil War, and he also introduced measures which led to the abolition of slavery in the country.

The memorial contains a large seated sculpture of Lincoln plus inscriptions of two well-known speeches by him - the Gettysburg Address delivered on Nov 19, 1863 during the American Civil War and the Second Inauguration Address delivered on March 4, 1865.

Noteworthy: The Lincoln Memorial is shown on the reverse of the US one cent coin, which bears Lincoln's portrait on the front. It also appears on the back of the US five dollar bill, the front of which which carries Lincoln's portrait.
